Surat and the Warroo Shire are now part of the Roma Regional Council.
Surat, situated on the banks of the beautiful Balonne River is located between Roma and St George on the Carnarvon Highway. Founded in 1849 after Sir Thomas Mitchell passed through the area, Surat is also the site of the very last Cobb and Co coach run. Surat boasts the Cobb and Co Museum and Balonne River Gallery, a Queensland Regional Gallery that regularly hosts travelling exhibitions.
Surat's main street is lined with interesting old buildings such as the Astor Theatre. Surat has a great social calendar, with many annual events including camp drafts, rodeos, the Surat Races, fishing competitions and the biennial Cobb & Co Festival.
Visitors are more than welcome to enjoy a game of golf, tennis or bowls at the local clubs or go for a dip in the pool while in town. Experience true country hospitality at the local cafes, hotel, motel and caravan park. If you're in town between February and May be sure to ask a local for directions to the water lilies on the Yuleba Road; when in bloom they are a spectacular sight and a photographer's dream.
Enjoy a drive through the surrounding scenic countryside, a walk along the riverbank or a wander down the main street - who knows what you will see in your travels?
